What is Osteopathy? 
 
Osteopaths are trained professionals who are skilled in diagnosis and treatment. Osteopathy is complementary to and supportive of Medicine. It is primarily a ‘hands-on’ Manual Therapy using a wide variety of treatment modalities including: 
• Massage techniques 
• Joint Manipulation 
• Mobilisation of joints 
• Stretching techniques 
• Exercise 
Adjuncts to osteopathic treatment may also be used such as: 
• Electrotherapy 
• Ultrasound 
• Dry needling (acupuncture) 
What can I expect on my first visit? 
 
Your first visit will take approximately one hour and will include: 
• Taking a comprehensive case history 
• Observation of posture and movement 
• Clinical testing of muscles, joints and nerves 
• A full explanation of findings 
• Treatment & Recommendations (as appropriate) 
Follow up treatments take approximately 30 minutes. 
PLEASE NOTE! 
In order to accurately assess the area to be treated, you may be asked to remove a certain amount of clothing. You will need to wear sensible underwear or shorts. Patients are welcome to bring a chaperone to any treatment. 
 
Meet The Team 
 
All Osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) 
Tom Hewetson and Jon McSwiney between them have over 30 years experience. They are both graduates of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM). 
 
Tom Hewetson 
BSc (Hons) Osteopathic Medicine. MSc Sports Injury and Therapy 
 
• Consultant Osteopath to London Wasps from 1995 to 2009 
• Worked for London Wasps on a daily basis from 1995 to 2001 attending matches pitch-side for first team, second team and U/21. 
• Osteopath to England / London Rugby from 1998 to 2006. 
• Currently a committee member of the Osteopathic Sports Care Association (a position he has held since 1995). 
• Associate member of the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine. 
• Had occasion to work for England RFU, England ‘select’ Sevens, London Broncos (now Harlequins RLFC), attended the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2000 as part of the core medical team. 
• Lecturer for the National Sports Medicine Institute. 
• He has worked with sports people from a wide variety of sporting backgrounds, from those who partake in sport and exercise for health and fun, to the keen amateur right the way to elite international athletes. 
Tom is a lecturer in Sports Care at Oxford Brookes University (OBU) and BCOM. He also lectures in anatomy and manual techniques at OBU. He is a published author of the Book: An Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques and has lectured at conferences and seminars on sports related subjects nationwide. 
 
Jon McSwiney 
BSc (Hons) Osteopathic Medicine 
 
• Jon has pursued his three passions. Firstly, clinical practice working both with Tom and at his own practice, Castle Osteopathic and Natural Health Clinic in Wallingford Oxfordshire. 
• Secondly, Jon has worked in all areas of employment as a musculoskeletal and ergonomics consultant. This has taken Jon to some extraordinary places; from working with oil tanker staff on the Isle of Skye, to how to safely move Napoleons gold desk at Windsor Castle for the Royal Household. 
• Jon is passionate about bringing the advice he gives to large employers to his clinical patients focussing on the everyday stresses of the work environment and developing strategies with the patient to reduce them. 
• In recognition of his work, the General Osteopathic Council listed Jon as one of the top ten osteopaths in the country for the Independent news papers Top Brass feature. 
Finally, Jon has spent many years as a lecturer in anatomy and osteopathy at BCOM and remains a guest lecturer. He now lectures for OBU in clinical studies focussing on future osteopaths clinical skills.
